About Us

Aquila is a fast-growing startup working on wireless laser energy transmission systems to power sectors underserved by traditional grid infrastructure, such as the aerospace industry. We're backed by some of the best investors in the world, and we're working with the most advanced aerospace organisations to develop novel and exciting capabilities. Our Aotearoa subsidiary, Eagleworks Limited, builds transmission technologies out of our laser development facilities in Parnell.

We believe in the power of teamwork and collaboration. We are a dynamic and supportive team of Eagles sharing a passion for pushing the boundaries of what is possible. We are committed to creating a great future for humanity and are looking for exceptional people to join us on this journey.

The Role

As a mechatronics intern at Aquila, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology that has the potential to change how we distribute energy around the world. Unlocking sustainable aviation, maritime and transportation.

Fundamentally, we need someone to help us build and test the laser charging system. Someone to connect systems together, test them insightfully, and collaborate with us to learn.

This could involve learning across a broad skill set: basic programming, sensor electronics, mechanical jigs, gimbals, actuators, basic optics, radio systems, microcontrollers, cameras, and more. It's a fun and diverse role that is suitable for a range of skill sets. It is flexible and depends on the candidate's strengths.

Who We're Looking For

  • Able to self-teach and learn on the job. We are doing something entirely new, so we discover new things together and learn.
  • Resourceful and creative in finding easy or "off-the-shelf" solutions to common problems.
We love candidates who share our values and are aligned our with what we look for

Responsibilities

  • Helping our targeting engineer to integrate sensors
  • Supporting our laser engineer to test and calibrate optical hardware
  • Collaborating with the team to develop and operate the end-to-end hardware testing system.
  • Includes regular trips outdoors to fly drones and shoot lasers at them.
  • Documentation of all tests and discoveries
  • (Optional) Developing automated and scalable testing systems
  • We love candidates with the following qualifications/aptitudes (but you don't need to meet them)
  • Python / C / embedded systems for communications, automation and data logging.
  • It will likely also include fundamental motor drivers for test systems
  • CAD skills - able to build up rigid enclosures, mounts or clamps for 3D printing
  • Knowledge of optical calibration and collimation
  • Familiarity with drones or drone systems

As part of our commitment to our people, we provide an annual $5k budget for side projects, gizmos and gadgets you want to develop, skills you want to learn, and ways you want to grow outside work.

  • Company-wide social events. Monthly birthday celebrations, Quarterly offsite hiking through beautiful Australian and Aotearoa landscapes,  annual end-of-year celebrations and much more!

  • Great, decked-out office! An inclusive community and culture in a welcoming office—full of lasers and cutting-edge hardware
